Master Classes

About Master Classes

The Master Class series enhances the Cherry Lane's mission to serve our community of both emerging and established playwrights. It offers an inside view of playwriting from several of its masters in an intimate setting.

Participants enjoy direct and focused contact with distinguished playwrights in discussions ranging from the challenges encountered in the writing process, to the production experience and the journey of a lifetime commitment to writing.

The program began in 2000 when Edward Albee agreed to take part in a question-and-answer session about his writing process. The event went so well that he agreed to return the following year for an expanded session that included playwrights Alfred Uhry, Craig Lucas, David Henry Hwang, Marsha Norman and A.R. Gurney.

We're very proud of the distinguished master playwrights who shared their wisdom with their colleagues. They include: Edward Albee, Amiri Baraka, Kia Corthron, A.R. Gurney, David Henry Hwang, Craig Lucas, Eduardo Machado, Terrance McNally, Marsha Norman, Harold Prince, Alfred Uhry.
